Korea and Turkey, historical allies and friends in a new world Naci Sarıbaş - Korea Post'a mülakat

Naci Sarıbaş 29.10.2011
Korea and Turkey are among the emerging global powers and they continue to widen bilateral as well as international cooperation in many areas with the support of their historical friendship. The two nations have had deep-rooted and long-standing friendly relations throughout the history. They have become “blood-brothers” following the participation of the Turkish troops in the Korean War. Today we remember not only the valour of our soldiers who fought to secure the blessing of freedom and democracy on the Korean peninsula, but also the exemplary social responsibility shown by the Turkish soldiers. The Turkish troops provided shelter to the Korean children who had lost their families under the tragic war circumstances. They later established the Ankara School to provide preliminary education for those children, that lasted for long years even after the end of the war. Today we still maintain contacts with the graduates of the Ankara School who have contributed to the development of Korea in the post-war era.

The relations between the two countries are excellent. The State Visit by His Excellency Abdullah Gul, President of the Republic of Turkey, to the Republic of Korea last year was a milestone with a view to setting the road map for the future cooperation of the two countries. The visit by His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister, to Seoul to attend the G20 Summit in 2010 also provided an excellent opportunity to give further impetus to strengthening bilateral and international cooperation. On the other hand, we are expecting the visits of His Excellency Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade this year and His Excellency Lee Myung Bak, President of the Republic of Korea in 2012.
As regional powers, Turkey and Korea are conducting policies generating security, stability and prosperity in their region and beyond. Their global effectiveness is growing and being recognized. We are proudly following in this regard recognition of Korea as a “Global Power” by the international community.

Turkey and Korea have so many issues in common and follow the developments very closely. Our views are similar if not the same on many internal issues just to mention few climate change, green growth, nuclear proliferation and global economic crisis, as well as Central Asia, Middle East and Africa. We are both donor countries and member of G20, we are working together in Afghanistan and fighting against piracy in Indian Ocean. Our political relations are exemplary. I believe there exists great potential which is waiting to be utilized. During my tenure I would like to reflect this perfect relations to other area of interest like economic and commercial relations inclusive FTA, investments, tourism, cultural activities, cooperation in third countries on construction projects, wide range industrial cooperation and the list will go on.

I have represented the Republic of Turkey in several countries such as Czech Republic, Belgium, Pakistan, Italy, US, Qatar, and Austria. Now, as the 21st Turkish Ambassador and my wife, we fell honoured and privileged to be appointed to the friendly country of Korea. As I mentioned previously, during my tenure I will exert my utmost effort to further enhance the already existing blood-brother relations between our countries.

This year we are commemorating the 88the Anniversary of the proclamation of Republic of Turkey. Since its foundation on 29 October 1923, Turkey has been pursuing a peaceful, realistic and consistent foreign policy guided by the principle of “Peace at Home and Peace Abroad” set out by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Finally, I would like to convey my deep appreciation to Korea Post for this meaningful opportunity to express my views and feelings regarding the special relations between the Republic of Korea and Republic of Turkey.
