Yeosu Expo press conference

Naci Sarıbaş 15.12.2011
Republic of Turkey acting in solidarity with the international community decided without hesitation to send troops in support of the friendly Korean people to defend their independence and freedom. Turkey dispatched around fifteen thousand soldiers who sacrificed their lives to change the fate of the Korean War. Turkey’s participation in the Korean War has transformed the long-standing historical and deep-rooted relations into a new phase of brotherhood.- “blood brothers”

Today, extensive bilateral as well as international cooperation and partnership between the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Korea continue to flourish on the basis of this exemplary friendship.

Turkey and Korea are today’s rising powers in terms of politics and economics in the far east and the far west of Asia. Two brotherly countries, seemingly far away from each other, are actually getting closer and closer every day and being recognized and valued by their contributions to the regional and global peace stability and prosperity as well as in combating against global challenges.

However, it is difficult to say that the economic and commercial relations are matching with the level of our political cooperation and are nowhere near the existing potential. We should be creative and flexible to find ways to decrease the exceptional trade deficit that Turkey is encountering. We should dwell on further enhancing our cooperation on avenues like trade, investments, wide range – industry including defense industry, tourism, culture and energy.

Participation in the 2012 Yeosu EXPO, which we attach great importance is yet another important example of deepening our partnership with Korea.

As you will be hearing detailed information on Turkish Pavillion and the cultural activities to be carried out during the EXPO by my colleagues, I would suffice by just mentioning the titles of the activities:

- Rich Turkish Cuisine
- Traditional handicrafts of water marbling, calligraphy, glass blowing
- Renowned Turkish Military Band
- Renowned “Fire of Anatolia” Dance Group
- Music Concerts
- Fashion shows
- Art Exhibitions

I would like to bring at least some of these cultural events that I have mentioned above to Seoul with a view to creating an opportunity to witness the riches of my country by the art-lover residents of this city.

Furthermore next year we will be having an exhibition in National Museum - “Emperors in Istanbul”.

And during September and October we will be running the Turkish Cultural Week”. So it will almost be a year round cultural activities.

No doubt through these activities we will be able to display rich cultural heritage of my country and will shine its image. Cultural and people-to-people contacts constitute a fertile basis in further enhancing bilateral relations in all avenues. We would like to launch a “Turkish wave” in Korea next year.

All these Yeosu EXPO, cultural activities and cultural week of course will have an additional positive impact on our relations in general and have more direct and immediate effect on some sectors like tourism. Turkey by receiving 30 million tourists is number 7 in the world unfortunately only welcomes 120 thousand from Korea. Our goal is to increase this figure to 500 thousand in the very near future.

Contacts between peoples will definitely open the ways for cooperation among private sector representatives in other avenues like economic and commercial, investment and cooperation in 3rd countries, which will serve for the benefit of both countries.
